A sanctuary, an oasis, a one of a kind experience communing with nature while lounging in civilized splendor—all are apt descriptions of this New York architect designed beach house on the Chesapeake Bay.
Guests enjoy stunning views from a finished floor height of 36 feet. The Eastern Shore of Virginia is famous for its flat tidewaters, but this property is perched amongst unusual relic Sandhills, complete with pines and gum trees between the house and the vast sea and sunset vistas.
The space
This home is warm, modern, unpretentious and it just WORKS. One very generously sized great room with a barrel vault ceiling serves as the public space, while three bedrooms and a study await your presence in the more private two story section. Cook in the gourmet kitchen with a French stove and TWO dishwashers. Watch movies on the 66” television attached to a rolling media cart which can be moved and angled in any direction. Lounge on the deck overlooking the bay and enjoy unparalleled western views. In the evenings, skinny dip (I’m not sure this is legal but who would ever know?) in divine summer salt water temperatures at your private beach. Heaven!
Details—guests have access to the entire space minus a couple of owner’s closets.
The kitchen and cooking:
• If you like Nespresso products, bring some capsules for coffee to use in the Nespresso machine. Otherwise try the French press or drip coffeemaker, or enjoy the electric tea kettle.
• Some basic spices and oils are stocked and rosemary grows in the yard, but you’ll want to supplement with your favorites.
• The gas stove has both a gas and electric oven and five burners.
• The tan kitchen counter is concrete. Please wipe up spills quickly and do not process acidic ingredients or colorful spices on the counters, they stain easily.
• The blue kitchen ISLAND counter is quartzite and much more resilient. Please process all lemons, limes, vinegars and wines on this surface.
• The fridge/freezer is German – it produces adequate but not copious amounts of ice. If you love ice in all your drinks, it might be a good idea to bring a bag with you.
• As mentioned elsewhere, there are two dishwashers. Praise be to God.
• A Weber charcoal grill is available outside for grilling.
The living space:
• Please only use the sliding doors indicated. Occasionally (once or twice per year during a driving northwest storm) rain is driven underneath the sliding doors (Yes, it’s like living in a Frank Lloyd Wright house sometimes 🙄). This does not hurt the floors, but a mop (and/or broom) is in the mud room if you need it.
• The floors are made from basalt from Italy. Please take care because they are slippery when wet.
• The Eastern Shore gets fruit flies starting September 1. This is why we are religious about only using a few doors—it’s tricky and critical to close them properly so that the fruit flies cannot enter.
• Compared to the rest of the Shore, this property has few biting insects (fruit flies just want your wine).
• The paddle board on the wall is decorative only. You can rent one (or a kayak) and get it delivered by calling SouthEast Expeditions.
The bedrooms and baths:
• The master (king) bedroom contains an en-suite bath with a deep tub, mosaic floor, separate shower and WC, plus a large TV in front of the bed.
• The second (Queen) bedroom facing the water also has en suite bathroom with a tub/shower combo and marble mosaic floor and walls.
• The third (king) bedroom uses a full bath in the main hall outside the doorway. All bedrooms have ceiling fans.
Outside:
• Is an outdoor shower 👍🏽.
• There is a garden hose to use for washing sand off feet
• There is a raccoon proof (so far) container for trash
• Is where the charcoal grill lives.
• Please do not leave anything on the deck which can get blown into the large glass DOORS.
• Wildlife abounds! Deer, foxes, woodpeckers, pelicans, and songbirds act like they’re on TV.
Guest access
Guests have access to the entire home and walk to a private beach down a clamshell path.
