A spacious 1BR corner loft overlooking the river and two parks. Lots of light and beautiful view.
In response to coronavirus, we are blocking four days of vacancy between all guests, and doing extensive disinfecting cleans of the space and linens. Kitchens are stocked with food.
Convenient location off Jefferson Ave and Detroit’s Riverwalk. Gated parking for one car.
First time visitors to Detroit and city regulars will enjoy using my loft as a base of operations.
The space
I have left to go sailing around the world! If you would like to book this loft, I have created a new listing under my mom’s Airbnb account. Same place, but she is hosting. Please book here: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/43914676

This loft is beautiful, open, and full of light. A perfect retreat in Detroit. I grew up in Montana, lived in India for a few years, and ran a journalism startup in Detroit called Jaunt, so I have decorated my place with remnants of my travels. I also contributed to a Detroit guidebook called WildSam Field Guides, so I can help you put together a good itinerary or fill any holes you might have. I mostly live on my sailboat during the summer and I teach Marine Science on a sailing school vessel.
The loft is all open except for the bathroom. The bedroom is separated by a wall without a ceiling. The kitchen has all the basic essentials and utensils plus coffee, tea, cereal, oatmeal, etc. for breakfast.
I have an HDTV with Blu-Ray, Roku, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and an HD OTR antennae for NBC, ABC, FOX, etc.
Then there’s the bed. Queen and super comfortable – I splurged on the bed because good sleep is really important to me. For extra guests, there is a queen pull-out sofa in the common area. The apartment can accommodate up to four (two in each queen bed) but you’re starting to get a little cramped. I will decline requests for greater than four people unless you have a special circumstance.
There are two A/C units: one window-mounted right next to the bed and the other in the living room space. They do a good job on the loft 90% of the time, but if the sun is glaring and it is scorching hot, they won’t be able to create the refrigerated A/C frigidity we are used to with central air. The bedroom unit works perfectly if you shut the door to the common area.
In the winter, you can turn the heat up as much as you like and make it toasty warm.
Since I took the listing photos, I have had new counters and cabinets installed in the kitchen (it’s better!). The dishwasher has also been removed per building policy.
Guest access
The whole loft. Yipee!
I have one parking pass and gate opener that guests may use to park in the building’s gated lot. These can be left on the counter when you check out. Keys can be put back in the lockbox.
There is an elevator in the building but I did not list it as an amenity because it is very old and often does not work. I would not count on having elevator access.
Other things to note
This is not a luxury loft building and is not priced as such. It is an old factory building converted to lofts and is occupied mostly by artists and musicians. The ceiling is thin and you can hear my neighbors from time to time. Light sleepers may find this annoying. However, I have not had a problem with them being noisy at night and, living here, it does not bother me. Whenever it has been a problem, I have reached out to the offending neighbor and it has been fixed right away. Part of living in a shared building 🙂
A note on check-in/check-out times:
We receive numerous requests for early check-ins and late check-outs. These types of requests are very easy for hotels to grant because hotels have many copies of identical rooms, meaning little disruption to cleaning schedules or the guests coming before or after you. With us, each room is individual. For this reason, we cannot accommodate any late check-out requests–our cleaning schedule is tight and we show up at 11am sharp.
If you are coming via Uber/Lyft from the airport and wish to drop off your bags, we can accommodate this after 12pm, but be aware that you will not yet have use of the room. Our cleaners need unobstructed access to the entire space.
If you have your own car, please keep your bags with you and check-in at 3:00pm. We have tons of amazing suggestions for places to eat or things to do if you are looking for a way to use the time up until 3:00pm, just let us know what you are after!
A note to photographers and filmmakers:
We have hosted dozens of shoots in our spaces over the years and hope to continue to do so. To help you make a decision on whether we are a fit for your project, here are guidelines and pricing:
There cannot be more than six people on-premises over the course of the day. It is too much of a disturbance to have more than six people in the loft at once or more than six people coming and going through our residential building.
We do not rent by the hour. To use the space, you must reserve at least one night. You then have use of the space from 3:00pm until 9:00pm and from 8:00am-11:00am the following morning. You are welcome to stay the night, but work has to wrap up by 9pm.
The prices on Airbnb are for accommodation only. In addition to the nightly rate charged for the time you wish to shoot, the following additional fees apply and will be settled after you reserve the space:
Commercial movie/video/documentary filming: $300
Commercial photography: $200
Any student project: $150
When you make your reservation, please include answers to the following questions in your initial note to us:
-How many people will be in the space at any one time and over the course of your stay?
-A very brief description of your project.
-Will you be staying the night? If so, how many people (this should be updated as part of your booking) will stay the night? How many beds will you require?
-What are the timings of your project while you are here?
We look forward to hosting you for your project if it is a fit!
My mom and I run these lofts together, which is so much fun. I created Thane Company LLC to make it more official, so your bookings are technically with that LLC.
